You should also consider how your Web site could help people to become experts faster. For example, going back to the example of the Web site for homeowners, it is probably not a good idea to scare off newcomers by having lots of complex terms and diagrams on the homepage. However, the Web site could gently introduce a few basic terms, and maybe even have an online dictionary containing all the commonly used terms.
The Web site could also have a section for beginners, filled with tutorials, basic diagrams, and interesting war stories, all designed to draw them in. Sample home projects could be ranked by difficulty so that homeowners would have some way of knowing what is easy and what is not. The Web site could also support a community, in which people could ask questions and slowly learn the ropes of taking care of, maintaining, and adding onto their homes. By providing many ways to learn and many places to fall back on, and by making it fun, design teams can "hide" the amount of training required and create a more gentle slope to gaining expertise while understanding customer's task.
Do you know which tools your customers have at their disposal, which tools are available to you, and what the capabilities and limitations of these tools are? For example, how many of your customers have fast Internet connections? If most people have slow network connections, using a lot of large images is not a good idea. By understanding how the Internet works, you can design Web pages that are faster to download.
Technology is a broad issue, but unfortunately it is either completely ignored or given too much primacy in designs. When Web design teams overlook the fact that many of their customers do not have the latest Web browser and plug-ins, they wind up with customers who are puzzled because they see nothing at all on the Web site. (This is not as uncommon as you might think. Just try surfing the Web with JavaScript turned off and you will see what we mean.) When technology becomes the central factor in Web design, it becomes technology for technology's sake. The customer's needs are certainly not being met on sites like this.
Design teams need to know what is possible with current technologies, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each technology. For example, do you know the differences between a GIF image and a JPEG image? When is it better to use one over the other? The Web design patterns in this book address some of these issues, but you can get more detail from books that focus on these subjects.
Here's an example of what happens when human abilities and the technological constraints that affect them are not considered in Web site design. Fast response times help maintain a sense of continuity in a task flow. Generally speaking, response times on the order of 100 milliseconds are needed for things like dragging icons and typing text. Response times on the order of 1 second (1,000 milliseconds) are required to maintain an uninterrupted flow of thought when completing a routine action like clicking on a button.
Now, you could read about these response times in a news article or a book on human factors and decide that all the pages on your site must be viewable by customers in less than a second. Although this notion is well-intentioned, given the current state of networking and Web technology, this is a completely unrealistic goal. Although they should never be the driving factor, technological constraints should still be considered as part of a Web site's design: people and tasks first, technology second.
If you talk to enough Web designers, you will meet a few that are slavishly devoted to a specific technology, such as Macromedia Flash. Such viewpoints lead to narrow and severely unbalanced views of the world, putting technology ahead of client goals and customer needs. Remember, if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Technology is a tool for helping people get things done: nothing more, nothing less.
