If your design clients don’t care about accessibility, tell them their clunky menu is stopping them from achieving a decent search engine ranking!
When customers visit your site and find that the homepage is the same as it was a week ago, or maybe a month ago, they might say, "Nothing new here!" and leave. If you don't keep the site updated, it is probably not worth revisiting. Customers will find a better site, one that has the latest information. Fresh content keeps customers coming back.
You might be tempted to let your site go stale because updating and publishing information by hand is tedious, slow, and error prone. It takes time to create or acquire content, but the rest of the publishing process can take even longer for large Web sites. You have to recode a Web page, upload it, test it, revise it, and check it again, before finally publishing the final page. By the time the page is published, the news may no longer be news. Without a publishing system, updating a site is a time-consuming and error-prone process.
A publishing system can simplify the process if you're willing to plan ahead. You might build a simple publishing system from content files and then push the data from these files into your Web pages. A more robust and sophisticated system might store content in a database, have the data, such as the date, automatically trigger updates, and then push new content through. Either way, a publishing system can save large amounts of time.
CSS allows you to create attractive navigation that is, in reality, no more than text—text that can be marked up in such a way as to ensure that it’s both accessible and understandable by all those who can’t physically see your design, but still want to get to your content. In this chapter, we’ll look at a variety of solutions.
When you create a publishing system, you will want to include content modules. These are the active areas on a page that change whenever new content comes online. Designing content modules into a site's pages makes updates quick and easy. Content modules and their component pieces deliver the power to integrate new content pages into an existing browsing structure. They can also be used to promote new related content, as well as to provide Highly PERSONALIZED CONTENT tailored for each individual site visitor.
To hook visitors into related articles, use the headline from the related content and perhaps a short description or blurb to explain the content of the related article. These HEADLINES AND BLURBS entice customers to click through to the full article. Related links can be grouped by subject or by whether they are EXTERNAL LINKS to other Web sites. Or if there are only a few of them, related links can just be thrown together in no particular order.
Use a content database to publish content. This way you can avoid recoding each page on which content appears. The content database can use the file system or a real database. Different levels of engineering are required for each, but the net effect is the same. It all depends on the amount of content on your site and the kinds of features you want to provide to your customers. Smaller sites can use files to store articles, whereas more sophisticated and larger sites should use a database, especially if PERSONALIZED CONTENT is provided.
